The ATM network is considered as a promising transport platform for multi-media communications, and should support different QoS requirements for various types of real-time and non-real-time applications. For real-time applications, it is required that some performance criteria such as an end-to-end delay bound, CDV bound, and cell loss probability be guaranteed for VCs conforming to the traffic descriptors negotiated at the call setup. On the other hand, there is no strict QoS requirement in terms of delay for non-real-time applications. Instead, a fair use of the available bandwidth should be achieved even if a misbehaving user sends a large amount of cells at a higher rate.
