Recently, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been spotlighted

for broadband wireless communications in the time-dispersive multipath channels due

to its robustness to the intersymbol interference (ISI). OFDM is a kind of multicarrier

transmission scheme, transporting an input data stream in parallel on a number of

orthogonal subcarriers. In fact, OFDM has the same performance as a single-carrier

scheme in the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. However, it becomes

effective in multipath channels since each subchannel carries a low bit-rate, thus resulting

in elimination, or at least mitigation, of ISI. In addition, OFDM is spectrally

efficient, and easily implemented by the fast Fourier transform (FFT) and inverse FFT

(IFFT). Consequently, OFDM has been adopted, or is being considered, as a basis for

several wireless communication standards.
