Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are good candidates for obtaining necessary infor-
mation from various application environments because of their high cost-e?ectiveness.
The WSNs applicable areas are varied, for example battle?eld surveillance, environ-
mental monitoring, patients monitoring, and inventory management. WSNs consist of
hundreds or thousands of cheap sensor nodes that are densely deployed in an unat-
tended environment in random fashion and perform multi-functionalities such as com-
puting, sensing, communicating, data processing, and routing with limited battery
power. In a WSN, all deployed nodes should be networked together in order to per-
form their given tasks. Therefore, to provide reliable data transmission and reception
in the network, designing routing protocols is an important issue. With the inherent
characteristics of WSNs, one of the most signi?cant constraints is the limited battery
power of the nodes since it is not feasible to recharge or replace deployed nodes once
they are deployed in an unattended area. In this regard, it is worthwhile to design
energy-e±cient routing protocols.
To achieve energy e±ciency, excluding redundant nodes is a well known strategy.
Due to dense deployment in WSNs, there are often redundant areas in the network, in
which sensing ranges overlap. By reducing redundant areas without loosing the overall
sensing coverage, while maintaining required system reliability, we can achieve energy
saving. To solve this problem, Tian at al. devised the Central Angle Calculation (CAC)
scheme, which was a novel approach calculating the central angle of nodes instead of
the coverage area to decide whether a sensor node can be turned o? or not.
